Quartz dust – the invisible danger on construction sites
Quartz dust is one of the biggest occupational health risks in construction, demolition and industry. Invisible particles from concrete, stone and brick can cause serious lung diseases in the long term – even though the risks are well known. With the right respiratory protection, you can protect both your health and your working life.
Why is quartz dust dangerous?
When hard materials such as concrete, stone, asphalt and ceramics are processed, microscopic particles of crystalline quartz are released. These particles are so small that they penetrate deep into the lungs when inhaled. The effects often creep up on you, but the consequences can be life-threatening:
- Silicosis (silicosis)
- COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
- Lung cancer
According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority, over 100,000 people in Sweden are exposed to quartz dust in their work every year.
