What is a fitting test?
A fit test is a method of ensuring that the respirator fits tightly against the user's face. The test confirms that the mask works as intended and that no particles or gases can leak in through small gaps.
There are two types of tests:
✔️ Qualitative tests – use taste or smell to determine whether the mask fits tightly.
✔️ Quantitative tests – use measuring instruments to objectively measure leakage.
Why is it important?
Protection against risks: An incorrect fit can lead to exposure to hazardous particles, gases or viruses.
Legal requirements and guidelines: In many industries, fit testing is required by occupational health and safety regulations and international standards.
Occupational health and safety responsibility: Employers have a duty to ensure that employees have the correct protective equipment.
When should the test be done?
Fit tests should be performed:
✔️ When a new mask model is introduced.
✔️ When there are changes in the shape of the face (e.g. weight change, scars, beard growth).
✔️ Regularly, often annually, as part of the company's occupational health and safety routines.
Fit test in Sweden – why is it important?
For a respirator to provide the intended protection, it must fit correctly and seal tightly against the face. This is why fit testing is used – a practical way to ensure that the mask works optimally for each individual user.
The Swedish Work Environment Authority refers to standard SS-ISO 16975-3:2022, which describes how the tests should be carried out. The test shows whether the mask seals correctly against the face and thus prevents harmful particles or gases from leaking in.
An inadequate seal means that air finds shortcuts into the mask – and then a large part of the protective effect is lost. That is why fit testing is crucial, especially in environments where the air may contain hazardous particles.
The test should always be performed by a trained and qualified person. One way to ensure competence is to be Fit2Fit accredited, which provides extra security for both employers and users.
